In 1955, “The Seven Year Itch” starring Marilyn Monroe, was the first “edited for television” movie. This event was a milestone in the history of movie and video distribution. No longer did we have to go to a theater to see a movie.

In the 1980s, movie rentals, made possible with the widespread availability of videocassette recorders, became popular. Eventually, Blockbuster Video emerged as the movie rental king. Now, however, Blockbuster, hurt by the emergence of the home delivered rental and the pay-per-view movie, is more than a billion dollars in debt.

NetFlix pioneered the home delivered movie rental, an offshoot of the movie rental business, in 1999. NetFlix now offers more than 100,000 TV show and movie titles from their library. Wal-Mart, DVD Avenue, and Blockbuster now also offer DVD rentals at rates ranging from $9 up to $18 per month. With these services, the media (DVD format) is usually selected online, but delivered and returned through the mail. NetFlix currently has more than 8 million subscribers, with a goal of 20 million subscribers by the 2012.

Pay-per-view (PPV) service from a cable or satellite service provider is a form of movie download, only the signal does not travel over the Internet. The primary limitation for these services is the number of movies available. But PPV in this format is very popular. According to Kristie Fortner (Rentrak VP), 2007 orders of free on demand movies were up 66 percent, orders of subscription programs like Showtime or HBO were up 23 percent, and PPV movie rentals were up more than 40 percent.

Online (Internet) downloaded movies appear to be the dominant delivery technique of the future. Vudu, TiVo, Apple’s iTunes, NetFlix, and Amazon.com currently offer video content via a broadband Internet connection. However, the number of movies in the download libraries is a bit less than the DVD libraries, with about 10,000 movies now available for download on NetFlix.

Most of the services are either offering movies in HDTV format, or planning to do so soon. Video quality is difficult to compare between the different services. The video compression algorithm, called a Codec, plays a significant role. The best objective method to compare signal quality is bit-rate. A comparison of bit-rate for some of the current online video alternatives:

Service….. Bit-Rate (mbps)

Vudu HDX………. 9-20

Vudu HD……………. 4

Xbox………………… 7

iTunes………………. 4

Cable TV……… 10-15

Satellite………….. 6-8

Blu-Ray……………. 40

Prices are coming down for the equipment needed for these services. Vudu slashed the price of their set-top box to $99 for the 2008 Christmas season (from about $300), but $50 of movie credits needed to be purchased with the hardware.

Kudos to Vudu for their online service. The interface has been compared to IMDB.com (a movie-buff website). You see an actor, select the resume, and you can see what other movies they’ve been in, and easily find your selection. It’s makes the process absolutely pleasant.

A significant downside of video downloads in the unavailability of recent releases. Movies are generally unavailable for at least a month after release, in order to protect the brick and mortar movie theater market. This is unlikely to change, at least in the near-term.

According to Joshua Danovitz (TiVo), the issue of download limits differs in each country. In the United States and parts of Asia, bandwidth capacity is still available and Internet users have fewer constraints, while other countries, including Canada, the ISPs are starting to restrict users bandwidth consumption. The problem will only get worse with the increased popularity of video downloads. Today, more than half of Internet bandwidth utilization in the United States is peer-to-peer, and most of that is video download. Peer-to-peer traffic is notoriously hard to control.

It is likely that the movie distribution business will follow the path blazed by the audio distribution business. The only reason for the time lag is that video files are much larger, and the Online capability was not yet ready.

One professional? How could one professional handle all my printing and marketing needs? Today print buyers or marketing departments have many different things to buy. They need to procure branding collateral material, like business cards, letterheads and envelopes, but also buy things like packaging, labels, invoices, banners, boxes, shopping bags, catalogues, direct mail pieces, gift cards, loyalty cards, and a host of other material.

Traditionally because of expertise and cost of production, printing companies focused on one brand of printing. An envelope manufacturer handled your envelopes, a four color process plant handled your catalogues, a banner plant handled your banners and a forms manufacturer handled your forms. Like every other industry, the printing industry has evolved. Today print management companies, brokers and agencies handle all brands of printing. Why is this better?

It’s better for numerous reasons. If you consolidate all your purchases with one supplier, you have more clout. Second most good brokers or print management companies use a few manufacturers for each printing process. This leads them to get the best price for you and allows you to fill your rush orders more easily. If one press is busy with another company’s rush order, your order must wait no matter how urgent your job is too. If you have access to a number of like manufacturers the odds are great that someone will have availability for your job. These brokers or print management companies also have a lot more buying power than just one company.

Buyers and accounting people have less time than ever. If they can deal with one person it makes the buyer’s job a lot easier and having one vendor makes the accounting department’s people a lot happier. Less cheques means more productivity and cost savings for the company.

The good print management or print brokers invest their time learning the new technologies, investigating the latest print companies presses to see which ones best meet their client needs. With the cost of presses today running in the millions, not all companies invest in new technologies. Digital presses today have grabbed a greater chunk of the offset market and will continue to grow especially in the variable data market.

Another explanation for the growth of print brokers and print management companies is that many print companies have decided to only deal with these companies and have no direct sales force. This allows them to deal with companies who know printing and know what they need and also allows them to get away from constantly hiring sales people and watching them leave and take their clients with them. The print companies like to stick to what they know best and have the print brokers stick to selling and customer service.

The market is now turning global, I know from my own company, Solutions Ink that where I only purchased locally, today I purchase through out Canada, the United States and also the Orient. With the internet my client base has grown internationally and finding the best printer by quality and location for press approvals and shipping costs. With the advent of e-commerce ordering and proofing system, where your office is located,is less important, than what you can do for them.

If you need more help understanding the difference between dealing with brokers as opposed to actual printing companies check out numerous print management companies on the web or check out http://www.solutionsink4u.com. See why companies like Nike, Canon, Tommy Hilfiger, Liz Claiborne, McGill University, and Governments have all been dealing with print management and print brokers. If you need help drop me an email at steve@solutionsink4u.com.

Back in the day, the only things you could really put on your website were hand-coded pages, images, and maybe the occasional file download. Today, however, huge amounts of software exist that can make your website work however you want it to – and, thanks to the efforts of volunteers, almost all of them are available for free.

At the moment, lots of people are into blogging. When you install a blog on your website, it allows you to write ‘entries’ instead of pages – a little like writing a diary. These entries then appear on your website automatically, latest first, without you having to touch any HTML.

A similar concept is wiki software, like the software that drives Wikipedia. If you put a wiki on your page, anyone can edit your website, meaning that they can add their own information to what you’ve already written, quickly and easily. However, you need to be careful of vandalism, as it is also very easy for anyone to delete all your pages and replace them with "You suck" – the best Wiki software and can recognize them immediately.

If you want your photos on the Web, you can use a photo gallery software. There are all types, but the chances are that your web host has already installed one in each case that is compatible with their system, so you could use that too. Gallery software allows you to upload and display images without having to manually put them on the side – good if youtake a lot of photos.

Popular websites can also include forums, where the site’s readers can talk amongst themselves. If you run a website for a hobby with many enthusiasts or something else that you think people are very likely to want to discuss, setting up a forum can be a very worthwhile use of your time.

Finding the right ecommerce host that will match your company’s needs, wants and demands is quite a challenge. Due to the overwhelming demands for web hosting, numerous ecommerce hosting service providers offer many options to choose from, and you should look for the best and most cost-effective ecommerce hosting company out there. Do some research and compare as many ecommerce web hosting service providers as possible.

Ecommerce hosting is one very potentially profitable business. The hosting charge varies based on the services, supports and the types, quality and quantity of the features provided. Even though some of the hosting companies do offer their services for free, there are many varied ways for them to make a profit – the most popular being that of selling ads to the prospective clients that are hosted on their websites. However, this type of ecommerce hosting offers no security and/or guaranteed service. Records of free ecommerce hosting show the instability, as they tend to close down within weeks, months and first year of operation. There are even those that close down within a span of a day or two. In such cases, the free ecommerce hosting proves to be effective for personal advances such as the posting of personal information, family photographs, and profiles, and for individuals who seek the fundamentals of web hosting by experimenting with programming scripts.

It never fails to verify how quite dependable a certain ecommerce hosting service provider can get by checking out the various websites that are currently owned and being maintained by the company or companies.

Web hosting can be defined as a service that allows users to post web pages on Internet. Web hosting service analysts identify top web hosting services and plans. They also provide a comparative analysis that may enable clients to decide upon a suitable web-hosting provider.

Competition between web hosting companies is fierce because of growing e-businesses. It is increasingly becoming difficult to make a suitable choice among several services available. Canada has become the hub for web hosting companies primarily because of its proximity to United States of America coupled with affordable Canadian dollar rates. Many free web-hosting companies have cropped up in Canada. Advertisements posted on such websites have made it possible to provide free web sites since the inception of such a concept in 2002.

An important point to be noted when choosing a free web hosting company is its reputation and history. If the support team of a web hosting company is not efficient enough then customers and clients, both may have to suffer financial losses. However, such companies depend on advertisements for their survival. It is possible for a company survive on revenue generated by advertisements in an open market. Hence risk factors are considerably reduced.

There are some web hosting companies that offer their services for a nominal fee of $ 6 (Canadian dollars) per month. This offer is as good as free for an American investor considering the quality and high technical skills that Canadian companies can provide.

Free web hosting is not advisable for business purposes as these companies often engage in fraudulent activities and have hidden costs that are revealed later. However, Canada is one of those countries that conducts business activities in an ethical manner. Risks for an investor are considerably lower compared to other companies situated in any other country. Free web space directory lists all web hosting companies that offer their services free of cost. Such a web site could be a good place to search for a free web hosting company that is reliable.

Despite better-known big name flower marketers, some local florists are thriving online, and customers are flocking to their Web sites for convenience, value, and quality.

The Internet has changed the face of business. In the United States alone, more than two-thirds of the population uses the Web regularly, and online revenues are growing nearly three times faster than traditional sales. The flower business is no exception. Flowers are already one most popular online shopping categories, and about 90% of florists in the U.S. and Canada have sort of a website.

"Today is an online e-commerce is a necessity for working in the flower industry." Says Barry Pond, President of the Jackman The Floral Pros in Ontario. "Online ordering is the fastest growing channel compared with telephone or in-store options and appeals to a younger demographic, in other words, our future customers." According to Walter Knoll IIIWalter Knoll Florist in greater St. Louis. “Our Web site is the glue that keeps us close to our customers, guides what products are being produced, and disseminates information to our employees.”

The move to the Web is one that fits the new generation. Revolutionary sites like eBay and Amazon have changed the way we buy and sell. With flowers, it’s a big net gain for the consumer. Flower lovers can still visit a local flower shop or order flowers by phone, but the Internet offers 24/7 convenience and a host of other services. It’s not surprising that a few large floral companies have emerged. What may be surprising to some is that a handful of more established traditional florists have kept pace, carving out a niche with online customers seeking more personalized service and direct local delivery.

“The Web was a natural outgrowth of our core business,” says Baxter Phillip of Phillip’s Flower & Gifts, a third-generation florist with ten shops in the Chicago area. "We ordered flowers sent electronically to florists colleagues in the late seventies began. Then we started receiving orders electronically to large business customers in the 80's. We started our first flower shop online fully in 1995 and regretted it. "

Walter Knoll Florist has opened its first shop in the mid-1980. His website at http://www.wkf.com special features local wedding flowers, flower care tips, monitoring,Employment information and much more. "It 's a full branch," said Knoll, "where the customer is almost everything they need right there is to know about our products and services."

How do these more traditional local florists compete online? According to Pond, who oversees http://www.jackmanflowers.com: "We offer customers the best of both worlds – professionally trained florists in a position to their local needs with a network of skilled florists elsewhere in less used for combinednationwide and worldwide delivery.” “Customers love being able to see the flowers they’re sending,” explains Phillip, “the convenience of ordering online anytime day or night, and our same-day and next-day local and nationwide delivery.” Knoll adds, “We’re much more nimble than most national companies, and build our business on personal relationships instead of just marketing dollars.”

At http://www.viviano.com, operated by Viviano Flower Shop, headquartered in Saint Clair Shores, MI, customers especially like the wedding flowers portfolio, which includes a budget estimator, as well as the ease of being able to order online. Other online resources include sympathy flowers, event decorations, and a detailed flower library. According to Paul Viviano, CEO, “Real florists are proud of their work and go out of their way to make senders and recipients happy; this pride and diligence is hard to find in a company that merely takes the order and sends it on to the florist.” “Another benefit of local online florists,” says Viviano, ” is that you can avoid the middleman and deal directly with the shop that is designing and delivering your gift.”

“Customers have told us they like ordering with a local florist they already know and trust,” notes Phillip. “They’ve seen our work and know we stand behind it. For deliveries in our own metro area, they know we provide more direct, cost effective service. Plus, we provide the same guaranteed nationwide delivery service as bigger companies. Many have told us about trying the big name merchants only to come back to us. Our Web site may not be as flashy, but we think our personal service and floral experience make all the difference.”

Other services at http://www.phillips-flowers.com include a Free Reminder Service, a pictorial Glossary of Flowers, and a way to send Free Virtual Flowers and eCard by email to anyone on the Internet. “You simply select a flower picture or E-greetings, "says Philip," Add your personal message and we'll do the rest. " Phillip offers tens of thousands each month at no cost to people around the world. "We also offer flower design and decorating tips, importance of flowers and many other useful information," adds Philip, "and our customers appreciate the fact that we keep all its information secret. "

Local florist web site can never advertised quite as fancy or as strong as that of the great namesbrands, but most use the same sophisticated encryption technology to protect customer information, and savvy Internet shoppers know they’ll often get better value and more personalized service by dealing directly with trusted local merchants.

Although the Internet is revolutionizing the face of business, florists’ fundamentals have remained the same. “It’s all about fresh flowers, design, delivery, and a commitment to customer service,” says Viviano. So, it’s no wonder that top regional and local brick-and-mortar florists are excelling online. “The best florists were around before the Web,” says Pond, “and the Web has made them even better.”

Convenience and security – these are huge factors in purchase decisions and often why a customer will open a merchant account with one provider over another. Often, there are no additional security measures beyond what is available through the merchant account payment terminal, so here is the upsell – get customers hooked on the end-to-end security encryption and convenience available with hosted processing services.

How the Internet Transforms Transaction Processing Methods

As more and more devices offer Internet access, and hosted services become the norm for process providers, it makes sense to offer all-encompassing solutions. A computer-based system allows for one, centralized area of service that can easily be leveraged to other external resources (terminals) as needed.

In addition, a hosted environment makes it possible to achieve end-to-end encryption, which is increasingly important for security purposes. With hosting, merchants can also offer a wide range of application services (loyalty rewards, gift cards, and prepaid cards) as well as gain access to cutting edge technology – all without large sums of capital. Combined, these features truly enhance overall value for merchants.

Direct Benefits of Hosted Payment for Merchants and Service Providers

A hosted option offers a quick and easy set up process, fast transaction speeds and the ability to integrate with terminals, all at no cost upfront. There are also added conveniences for merchants, including:

• Consolidated reporting and transaction data

• Ability to take advantage of new processing features and options

• Automatic integration with customer relationship management services

• Immediate updates to gateway supported terminals virtually, saving time

Hosting also offers more sophisticated security at a manageable cost for merchants, and creates a revenue generating opportunity for service providers that offer fee-based compliance. Often these services are charged per use, which allows merchants to forgo a large, upfront investment in security.

The more services offered through hosting, the more monthly fees providers could add to their bottom line, and build stronger, more meaningful relationship with their merchants as they position themselves as true solution providers.

Intermediaries or middlemen exist in every business; they act as liaisons between the manufacturer or service provider and the final customer. In most cases, they might not even own many assets that they handle. Middlemen make a profit in the transaction.

The Internet has the potential to eliminate intermediation by offering services directly to the customer; at the same time, it has spawned new types of intermediation services. Web hosting is one such service that has given rise to intermediaries called resellers. Resellers are third parties who buy space from web hosting companies and then resell the space to individuals and small and medium enterprises for a profit.

Generally, large web hosting companies sell multiple accounts. The buyers of multiple accounts may then sell the unutilized accounts to others. The resellers are usually website developers. Since the resellers operate from a parent host, it would be very difficult to identify a reseller. The reseller buys space at a discount and then marks it up, which makes a win-win situation for both reseller and the buyer.

In order to be a reseller, one needs to have multiple domains. As a third party, it is essential that, in addition to the domain account, the reseller needs to have full control over the administrative panel of the client’s websites. It enables the reseller to hide his or her identity as a reseller. The terms and conditions should be executed by the reseller and the buyer.

The advantages of dealing with a reseller is that they provide extra services like web and graphic design, search engine promotion, and managed services. As the resellers are familiar with the configurations, they may be able to provide more support for the client.

The reseller is ideally suited for those businesses operating from homes or individuals because the reseller has fewer clients than the parent; as such, the reseller may be able to provide better services. The businesses must take care to know the features available, and to be familiar with the maintenance and technical support before signing the terms and conditions. For instance, if the reseller doesn’t pay the fees to the parent, the websites will be shut down.

You may automatically think that the answer is yes but do you know why your potential clients may choose your competitors? This became very clear to me last weekend when I stopped for lunch at Tim Horton’s with my daughter. (For the non Canadians, this is THE doughnut chain in Canada which is one of the strongest brands in Canada. They even have a location in Afghanistan for the Canadian troops).

I like to stop at Tim Horton’s for lunch when out shopping or when on the road. They have sandwiches and soup and no french fries to tempt me. However, in the past, I often drove by Tim Horton’s and went to one of their competitors. Why? Was it better food? No. Was it convenience? No. I often would wait til the next exit to get lunch there. The reason… they were a cash only business and in the age of debit cards I often had no cash and driving to a bank and getting my daughter out to go use the ATM was too much to ask before getting a quick lunch.

So I was happy to see last week that they now accept credit cards and are even going to offer a prepaid card to use. So now I can stop there and get a soup and a bagel any time the fancy strikes.

What are the blind spots that you have in your business? What areas you could improve to make it easier for people to do business with you?

Here are some areas for you to consider:

Payment methods: Do you offer all credit cards? Paypal?

Number of staff: Are there enough staff available to help clients?

Ways to Buy from you: Online, Phone, Fax, etc

Website oes your website answer the most common questions prospects may have?

Voicemail: Is your voice mail system customer friendly or are they stuck in voice mail hell?

Go through each of these questions and take an honest look at your company. I discovered that my clients would like to pay by AMEX so they could get Airmiles. When looking at staffing don’t just look at the number of staff, look at how available they are to your clients, for example, on a recent trip to buy a DVR, it took me 5 minutes to find someone to answer my question and when I found him, he was standing with 5 other employees. Dig deep. Walk a mile in your clients shoes and see how easy you make it to do business with your company.

A small company wants to go online as a marketing effort or to conclude, as customers of e-commerce went online, their needs to acquire. But because of their size, small and medium enterprises are forced by tight budgets, or They simply do not need many of the characteristics Provided by the web hosting.

Similarly, an individual must, as a freelance writer, may be in line to publish documents and articles with onlyjust enough space at minimal cost. Some web hosting providers in their target niche group of customers with services at low cost. The low cost advantage is gained by providing a minimum of space on a server. A single server can be packed by many websites, because they have less storage space and low cost.

The best web companies can be found online, and there are many providers who operate from cities like Toronto and Ontario. A typical plan may cheap 500 MB memory, 30 GB of datatransfer, and email accounts limited. Prices can start at $ 1 per month. Some ISPs provide incentives, such as the limited number of hosts free monthly recommendations to friends and relatives.

The low rates come with many restrictions. A server can be packed in carry less speed, and slow data transmission and side vents. The web host companies handling can lower costs through less frequent customer support, leading to more downtime in case of problems and more complaintsPeriods. It can also help a lack of technical support for developing web pages and changes.

Unlike low-cost hosts are hosts and hosts free family. Budget host of services that support best cheap hosts, such as twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and more storage space. There are free hosts that exchange of domains of free space. Free-hosts can advantageously for sites in the earlyStages and nonprofit organizations. But they also have the same disadvantages as a host at low cost.
